Thunderstorm

This example implements the gravity-wave scenario of Snively and Pasko (2003), “Breaking of thunderstorm-generated gravity waves as a source of short-period ducted waves at mesopause altitudes” (doi:10.1029/2003GL018436). A background atmosphere is prescribed from CSV profiles (density, temperature, composition), and forced by an idealised thunderstorm source region.

The setup couples two solvers:

  1. a compressible Euler solver for the background atmosphere, including hydrostatic balance, open side boundaries, and reflective / radiative vertical boundaries, and
  2. a diffusion solver that evolves velocity and temperature with height-dependent viscosity and thermal diffusivity
