Gravity waves

We also consider a model problem for atmospheric gravity waves using the ExaHyPE2 framework. The goal of this setup is to simulate the propagation of gravity waves in a vertically stratified, compressible atmosphere, including the interaction between fluid dynamics and basic thermo-chemical processes in the upper atmosphere. This provides a multi-physics benchmark combining fluid flow, diffusion, and atmospheric chemistry within the same adaptive, hyperbolic PDE framework.

The atmospheric background state is constructed from tabulated atmospheric profiles stored in a CSV file. For each grid point, the code samples the CSV data as a function of height and interpolates between adjacent rows to obtain a smoothly stratified initial condition. From this table, the model reads the mass density, temperature, and number densities of the major neutral species: atomic oxygen \( (\text{O}) \) , molecular oxygen \( (\text{O}_2) \), nitrogen \( (\text{N}_2) \), and optionally hydrogen \( (\text{H}) \).
